Reading With Your Child

Reading with your child every day is the best way to encourage them and help them become an independent reader. I love reading with my children every day. I am watching my childrens love for books grow daily. My 4 year old retells stories and makes up stories based on the pictures she looks at in the books. She will sit with her nose in a book for over 30 minutes. My 17 month old has books with pictures of animals, which he loves! He chooses his favorite books and brings them to me. We look at the pictures and name the animals. He will sit still for 10 minutes at a time. Books are important to them and reading has become an enjoyable daily activity! No, my children are not reading yet. But they love books and choose to spend time surrounded by literature.

I've been reading with my daughter since birth - and, well, even before. She's currently in first grade and can now read books well above her so called grade level. We read every night - chapter books now - and talk about what's happeneing. The most exciting thing is that when she wants to know about a detail or doesn't understand something she asks to go back and find it. That's what good readers do internally and as teachers we've got to get them to voice that externally to us so we can help with misconceptions. Occasionally I'll ask her something about the story and usualy she's right on. Almost every night she falls asleep with several books in her bed and often times I have to pry a book off her face and out of her hands because she fell asleep reading one.
It's been well worth the 15-30 minutes each night just to inspire her to love stories and books. Reading instruction can get pretty technical, but something as simple as reading aloud - I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE - WORKS!

Reading has enriched my life so much and I can't remember a time that I couldn't read. I think you're right--immersion is the key. Surround a child with texts and read to your child every chance that you get every single day. Make sure they see you reading all kinds of texts. Have reading material in the bathroom--what a quiet, wonderful place to read. Let them read while they are on the potty. When they're in the tub, read to them! At bedtime--read! Tell them stories in the car and let them help you tell them. Language, language, language--surround them with it. Read the signs while traveling. Let them dictate a story to you and make a book out of it. Happy reading!
